Greetings! In the previous article "Boiler protections. A quick check for the inspector" we discussed the main boiler protections that are checked by different inspectors. In this article we will consider the protections of an equally dangerous mechanism (increased attention from MARPOL inspectors) - the incinerator. Based on the previous article, you can easily check all the incinerator protections using the same methods, so this article will be smaller in volume and I will not describe all the checks in detail.

We will check the protections using the example of the Japanese incinerator Miura BGW-30N, but we will also "hook" a little on the Volcano, Kangrim and Atlas incinerators.

Checking protections of the main air compressors

Greetings! I continue to write articles on checking the protection of various mechanisms on a ship and this time we will consider the compressors of the starting air of the main engine. Usually, they are of no interest to inspectors, but there are exceptions.

Boiler safety devices. A quick check for the surveyor

Greetings! In this article I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the main safety devices of auxiliary boiler on a ship that inspectors like to check. It does not matter which inspector came to the ship (PSC, flag, annual surveyor, etc.), usually the checks are not much different.

Surveyors mainly look at how critical protections work (selectively), i.e. those protections that stop the boiler (shutdown protection). They are not very concerned with auxiliary signals (alarms). But it is necessary to be prepared for everything, i.e. for the fact that the inspector can check the auxiliary alarms of the boiler.

Temperature controller. Replacing and adjusting the temperature controller on a cargo crane

Greetings! In this article we will change the temperature controller of a cargo crane. It has failed and for this reason the crane hydraulic protection system based on oil temperature does not work.

The temperature controller (PID controller) on the crane, together with the PT100 RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensor, are key elements in protecting the crane hydraulics from oil overheating. 

Pressure switch. The fuel pressure switch on the boiler has failed. What is an abnormal fire?

Greetings! Today our fuel pressure sensor on the boiler failed. We found out about this as a result of the malfunction of the boiler and the alarm “Abnormal fire” on the panel. This problem is quite critical and requires an immediate solution.

According to the instructions, the pressure in the line to the fuel spray nozzles should be about 20 kg, the pressure switch setting should be about 14 kg (low pressure protection).
